Technical alliances in the Canadian electronics industry: an empirical analysis
Article Abstract:
Strategic alliances undertaken by 35 Canadian electronics firms and their technical partners are evaluated. A study shows that there are three types of technical alliance formats, specifically, when there is a technological leader, when the decisions are made by all members and when firms simply coordinate research anddevelopment without any other formal agreements. In addition, government-sponsored alliances tend towards consortia whereas private alliancesare generally international partnerships.

Small-firm formation in biotechnology: a comparison of France, Britain and Canada
Article Abstract:
A poll of small biotechnology companies in France, the UK and Canada was carried out to compare their patterns of formation, survival and growth. The results revealed that the biotechnology sector in the three countries followed a growth pattern similar to US biotechnology firms although they emerged one to four years later than their US counterparts. Unlike US firms which had an entrepreneurial culture, the growth of French, Canadian and British firms' was driven by public policy.

An analysis of cooperative R&D in the United States
Article Abstract:
Several US firms have been using cooperative R&D as a business strategy. Firms usually resort to cooperative R&D when they are overwhelmed by the costs of R&D resources, when they focus on basic research, when they are threatened by foreign competition and when they intend to conduct standardization R&D. In contrast, firms planning to diversify their R&D activities do not usually resort to cooperative R&D.
