Gazzaniga was born on Dec 12, 1939 into a large Italian-American family. As a 21-year old psychobiology student working for his Ph.d degree, Gazzaniga, together with Roger Sperry, pioneered split-brain research. His most recent research involves a mapping method for the brain's surface.
