A biography is presented of Ina May Gaskin, a midwife and writer, who became the president of the Midwives Alliance of North America. A procedure for relieving shoulder dystocia, by putting a laboring mother on all fours to expand her pelvis to free her baby from being stuck behind her pelvis, has become known as the Gaskin Maneuver, the first obstetrical procedure to be named after a midwife.
