The epidemiologist Janine Jagger began her work in 1985 to prevent the needle-stick injuries caused by accidental pricks with contaminated syringe needle. She received a Distinguished Inventor Award from the group Intellectual Property Owners in 1988 and the President's Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics in 1989.
