Maureen Stapleton was an earthy and blowsy 'method' actress, deeply grounded in theater but also respected for her work in films and on television. Among Stapleton's many Broadway successes were her Tony Award-winning creations of Serafina delle Rose in Tennessee Williams's 1951 drama "The Rose Tattoo", and in Hollywood she won an Oscar for her performance as the anarchist revolutionary Emma Goldman in the 1981 film "Reds".
