The great 1919 transatlantic aviation race
Article Abstract:
Rare varieties of Newfoundland airmail stamps exist which were over-printed after being found in a plane wreck in 1919. Only 200 copies of the three cent Caribou stamp were issued, and all were signed on the back. These unofficial stamps mark the historic first trans-Atlantic flight attempts.
