Lumber & building materials: technology leads lumber yards to truss plants
Article Abstract:
Lumber yards are making additional revenues by adding other types of operations, such as panel making and roof truss manufacturing. Lumber yards that can reach a minimum of $750,000 per year are the only operations that should even consider opening a truss operation because the set up costs can reach as high as $1 million to $2 million including the computers, saws, presses and other equipment and vehicles needed. However, computers and computer-aided design programs are making such an operation more feasible for smaller shops.

Could Hechinger's stores still be contenders?
Article Abstract:
Hechinger's could be an attractive buy for Sears & Roebuck, since the chain home center retailer's stock has fallen to $4 per share from $14 per share. Hechinger's lumber yards and hardware stores used to be filled with unique merchandise during the 1970s. However, when it expanded with its Home Project Center format, the firm created stores with more standard merchandise and without its usual low-pricing strategy. It also opened stores in areas where shoppers were not familiar with the company name.

Leroy Custer: BMC West
Article Abstract:
BMC West marketing VP Leroy Custer noted that the percentage of the company's sales that result directly from wood products such as lumber has fallen from 56%, in 1993, to 47%, in early 1997. That is because the company is selling more value-added products such as doors and trusses, he explained. BMC buys 85% of its lumber directly from mills. Custer's comments on other aspects of BMC's business and on the lumber market in general are included.
