Pruning a grapvine

Grapevines need to be pruned and trained to assure plentiful and plump grapes. One method of training and pruning, the umbrella Kniffen system, is described. Techniques for removing dead and basal shoots, selecting the best canes and spurs to retain, and cutting are presented.

Sharpening bypass pruning shears

It is best to disassemble bypass pruning shears when sharpening them. Equipment needed to do the job includes a whetstone, honing oil, locking pliers, razor blade and machine oil. A four step guide covering disassembly, cleaning, sharpening and reassembly is given.
