Metaphorical thinking is one of the most essential parts of garden design, as design is all about seeking and delving into the unknown, and being creative and novel. The word 'bed' brings to mind comfort, security and rest, concepts alien to the struggle gardening can become, but with a little imagination the gardening concept can be carried further.
