A gardener must know when and how to pick ripe summer vegetables to get the best quality and yield. Tips are given on the harvesting of several garden crops including snap beans, cucumbers, carrots, cabbages and peppers. Tips are also given on summer irrigation, and growing daylilies and hot peppers.

Late fall chores in the garden include a clean up of tools, and sorting out potatoes for storage, composting or the garbage if disease is noted. Carrots stay in the ground, but beets must be pulled and stored. Ideas are given for Christians decorations made without killing trees.

The beet plant provides both a nutritious vegetable and leaves supplied with vitamins. Beets need soil with a pH of 6 to 7. Compost in the soil helps microbes to release much-need boron from organic matter.
