They were marketed during the Depression and their surfaces personalized with illustrations of celebrities, army insignias, space flight and other items. Avie R. Baer and Alexander Neumark document the invention of the Zippo lighter in their book "An American Legend Zippo.'

The purses made in late 20th century are considered as collectibles to be worn or displayed and prices for these can range from $50 to several hundred dollars, depending on the design, workmanship and maker. Historically, the elegant purses were those embroidered with heraldic or floral patterns in silver, gold and pearls on expensive silks.
