Winter's wonder

Deciduous trees without leaves in the winter look like nature's sculptures. They reveal artistry after winter strips them of transitory foliage and these snow-dusted trees look crystalline and delicate as if they would shatter with the slightest touch.

The emergence of Mayapples (Podophyllum peltatum) from the grounds of moist woodlands is a sure sign that spring has arrived in the South. The plant is native from Quebec and Minnesota, and when mature has a large apple-like berry which is edible.
