12 days and 184 birds
Article Abstract:
'The Twelve Days of Christmas' is believed to have begun as a game song and was first printed in 1868. The jolly Christmas carol, which some argue is actually a love song, talks of 184 birds of six different species which someone received from her true love. All the birds are fertility symbols.
