A milk round aimed at the unemployed
Article Abstract:
Express Dairy (England) combines efforts with Joblink under the auspices of the Employment Training program to recruit unemployed people and train them for specific jobs. The dairy established the program to overcome high employee turnover and improve equal opportunity in recruitment. The program: customizes training for specific companies; guarantees trainees jobs upon successful program completion; and offers them bonuses and regular salaries at the end of training. Joblink's role in the program is: recruiting and counseling potential employees and designing the training they will receive. Companies considering similar unemployed recruitment and training programs should: closely oversee course design; be aware that long-term unemployment makes it difficult to adjust to work routines; maintain trainees' motivation; and include off-the-job training in the program.

Assessment on the sales floor
Article Abstract:
The National Retail Training Council's decision to launch the National Retail Certificate in 1989 created a need to train the people who will assess and deliver the certificate in the workplace. The organization engaged the services of TDA Consulting Group which developed a training program for assessors. Training was conducted using the cascade approach, meaning that training passed on from TDA consultants to company trainers, from company trainers to area trainers and, finally, from area trainers to shopfloor supervisors who delivered the certificate. Through this training program, the retail industry gained some 12,000 trained assessors and counter-signing officers within a three-year period. This has resulted in the issuance of about 17,000 Retail Certificates.

Training on another plane
Article Abstract:
British Airways PLC's Oxford Certificate in Management is a distance learning program that is enabling personnel from ten countries to receive training from experts from five different organizations. The students, which include baggage handlers, flight attendants and pilots, are all training to become supervisors of the company's many operations. They work on learning materials in their own homes and in their own time. Program participants are required to submit assignments for checking and attend workshops for six half-days. The course lasts for one year and only about 300 students are accepted annually.
