A positive guide to theft deterrence
Article Abstract:
In the U.S., employee theft accounts for approximately $40 billion in annual corporate losses, or 70 percent of all business losses, and is thought to be responsible for 30 percent of all small business failures each year. Corporations should formulate employee theft policies that: (1) define theft and the levels at which certain actions will be taken, (2) communicate the corporate attitude toward theft, (3) allow employees to retain their privacy and dignity, (4) encourage employee cooperation in theft prevention, (5) provide for employee counseling, and (6) address related issues such as employee earnings levels, employee job satisfaction and morale. Other suggestions to reduce employee theft are also discussed, including giving employees the items they are prone to take.
