Article Abstract:
A study by Kurt Vandaele of University of Ghent found the union membership in Belgium has reached 2.7 million in 2000. As the unions of Belgium allows continuation of membership of those who lost employment by any reason the members who are not employed amounts to a third of the total.

Sweden has the highest rate of labor union membership of any country of the world, with nearly 80% of the country's workers organized. However, political pressures and the changing Sweden economy are presenting challenges to these organizations.
