Compensation
Article Abstract:
A 136% increase in executive pay in Mexico from 1989 to 1991 has brought it in line with that of industrialized nations. This was due to adjustments corresponding to the inflation rate and the increased demand for competent managers. However, the practice of offering a variety of cash payments apart from the basic pay makes Mexico's executive compensation more complex than that of other countries. The types of cash payments and company perks offered are enumerated and expatriate compensation is discussed. Changes in executive compensation resulting from the North American Free Trade Agreement are seen, such as the adoption of pay-for-performance and deferred compensation plans.

The maquila industry
Article Abstract:
Mexico's maquila industry program allows foreigners to establish 100% foreign-owned and managed firms. These firms are allowed to import tax-free machinery and materials for the manufacture of any product and to export these products to any country. The advantages of the program are cited in comparison with similar programs in other countries. Guidelines for setting up an employee benefits plan for maquila plants are presented and the usual employee benefits offered are enumerated. These benefits are designed to improve productivity, attract and keep competent workers, assure workers of financial stability and to take advantage of fiscal benefits for the firm.
