Do your job-applicant tests make the grade?
Article Abstract:
HR directors should make sure that the pre-employment tests they use in screening applicants are valid. They have to prove to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) that the validity of a test when observable differences exist in the scores of different subgroups of the population for a test. This means they have to prove that the characteristics the test measures are related to the job and the best way to go about this task is to conduct a job analysis for the position for which the test is administered. HR managers should be aware that there are two types of validity that the EEOC acknowledges. Content validity is when there is a direct relationship between what a test measures and what the job description says. Predictive validity is when the scores can predict levels of performance. Guidelines are available from the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, the Assn of Test Publishers and the American Psychological Assn.

Solve the long-distance hiring dilemma
Article Abstract:
Technological innovations are making it possible for companies to conduct long-distance hiring without increasing their budget or wasting their money. This is in sharp contrast to the past, when companies had to choose between raising their hiring expenses or allocating more time to the hiring process just to search for candidates across the country. ESSENSE Systems Inc. uses a service called SelectCandidate being offered by EagleView Inc. to evaluate a comprehensive set of information on different candidates and make fast decisions about who should be brought in for the interview. The service involves recording video clips of candidates who are required to answer questions and are then asked to sit for an interview if they make a good impression. On the other hand, Korn/Ferry International relies on videoconferencing to extend its reach to candidates from faraway places.
