Employees' views highlight strengths and failings of UK manufacturing
Article Abstract:
A 1993-1994 University of Sheffield survey of 5,500 UK manufacturing employees concludes industry managers are more concerned with production issues than with employee communication and participation. While the survey also measured levels of job satisfaction, its main finding indicates a wide gap between employees and employers on issues such as organizational efficiency and employee autonomy, welfare, and empowerment. The survey also shows females are more satisfied with their work environment than men and employees of larger companies are more satisfied than those of smaller companies.

Going to the polls: BA's quarterly opinion surveys
Article Abstract:
The UK's British Airways (BA), beginning in Oct 1995, is conducting employee attitude surveys every three months. The quarterly surveys are conducted on a sample of employees, but BA also conducts a rolling staff survey to assure full coverage of issues. The surveys, which have a 40% response rate, evolved out the 1991 and 1993 surveys conducted with all staff. A positioning letter is used to give participating employees notice of the surveys.

Making employee surveys work
Article Abstract:
A UK survey concludes properly-conducted employee surveys are useful in improving work life and employee morale. Surveys take time and money, so they should be carefully planned, involve consultants, and be supported by exploratory interviews and follow-up workshops. Companies should take time to analyze results and make informed decisions based on the findings.
