Giving credit to prior learning
Article Abstract:
Many seasoned employees find that a lack of formal qualifications is blocking their advancement to better paying positions, but they are reluctant to undertake training to learn what they already know. Accreditation of prior learning (APL) is a process by which employees gain accreditation for their job experience. A six-stage APL model has been created in which local centers recruit candidates, the prior work experience of candidates is elucidated with the aid of APL counselors, and experience is matched to modules or units for an award. Candidates compile a portfolio of evidence of work experience, which is reviewed by assessors who recommend candidates for accreditation. An awarding body reviews recommendations and the evidence and approves credit toward an award.
