The article focuses on labor law as the primary barrier in hiring contingent employees, defined as employees who do not have a long-term employment contract or whose work hours vary nonsystematically. Topics include the Fair Labor Standards Act, tax policy, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, workers' compensation and licensing requirements.

Self-employment: when nothing else is available?
Article Abstract:
The article examines the circumstances behind the recent growth in self-employment, and concludes that this rise is not due to lack of other job options but is instead a conscious choice. In addition, the vast majority of self-employed persons enjoy what they are doing, and would not want work that fits normative employment descriptions.

Self-employment and dynamic capitalism
Article Abstract:
The article explores how self-employed persons contribute to dynamic capitalism, or the economic development fostered by new, small-sized businesses. It is concluded that self-employment cannot be categorized as under-employment and is not primarily driven by unemployment, and is therefore a viable contributor to the economy.
