Grease the gears of equality
Article Abstract:
The 'Wheel of Power and Control' framework developed by the Domestic Abuse Intervention Project to describe the tactics used by abused men to exert power and control over women can be applied to the relationship between genders in the workplace. At work, just like at home, men try to assert their power over their female colleagues through sexual harassment, emotional abuse, wage disparities, threats, intimidation, isolation and the use of male privilege. Fortunately, HR professionals can transform this Wheel of Control and Power into the Wheel of Equality through the use of employee diversity programs. By harnessing the elements of these programs, including gender diversity training, open communications, women's networks and balanced nurturing culture, companies can transform their power-based work environment into one that provides equal opportunities for women and minorities to succeed.

Productivity is shaped by forces beneath corporate culture
Article Abstract:
An organization's purpose determines what type of leadership it values, what types of skills are encouraged, and what value it places on its employees and managers. Attempts to improve productivity through quality circles and other means fail when a company is not committed to worker participation - the basic principle which underlies such techniques. To improve productivity, organizations must start at the top and build a framework that supports a commitment to quality and worker participation at every level of the organization.

Terms of equality: a guide to bias-free language
Article Abstract:
Personnel managers should communicate with workers by not using sexism in their language. Rather than mankind or man, use woman and man, and humankind or humanity. Rather than man-hours, use staff hours, working hours, or another term, like clerical hours.
