HBO's program for merit pay

Home Box Office Inc (HBO) rewards employees by using a merit pay system which helps employees to understand why base salary levels are assigned and what types of merit raises can be expected. Every year, managers have a goal setting sessions with employees. Goals are reviewed midyear, and then performance reviews are conducted in relation to objectives by using a rating system which sets minimum and maximum ranges for every position. The personnel department provides managers with a number of tools for employee evaluation, including evaluation reports and year-to-year comparison figures. In addition, the personnel department helps facilitate bonus administration by developing and distributing bonus worksheets and by running reports for review by senior management.

Motorola turns vision to profits

The human resources department at Motorola Inc's Semiconductor Products Sector (Phoenix, AZ) implemented Motorola's Organizational Effectiveness Change Model at the the company's Guadalajara, Mexico, discrete semiconductor plant at the request of the plant's management to boost employee morale and enhance plant productivity and competitiveness. The steps in the model implemented at the Guadalajara site included instilling a vision or purpose in employees at all levels of the organization, developing strategies for reaching company goals, and making organizational changes that reflected an increased appreciation of the importance of the multicultural workforce.
