HR's vital role at Levi Strauss
Article Abstract:
Levi Strauss and Co's new aspiration statement has become the guideline in creating human resources (HR) programs for promoting employee well-being. Task forces have been organized to facilitate communication between management and employees. HR has also established programs such as domestic partner benefits, flexible-hours work program and a child care voucher program. Core curriculum classes are held to orient employees on company objectives, while its Partners in Performance plan allows compensation to be based on an individual's fulfillment of these objectives. A work-and-family task force has also been created to deal with issues in balancing employees' professional and family lives. Niche benefit plans are provided for minority members of the work force. An HR council also holds bi-monthly meetings to coordinate all HR activities for both national and overseas operations.

Employee participation drives production
Article Abstract:
Levi Strauss and Co's manufacturing plant in Blue Ridge, GA, has implemented the Alternative Manufacturing System (AMS) team process and the Time Off With Pay (TOPP) flexible hours program as part of the its plan to increase employee participation in operations. The AMS process relates compensation and incentives to team objectives, while the TOPP is a program that lets employees choose their own schedules. Managers, now referred to a team leaders train and facilitate their teams' familiarization with the new system. Sewing machine operators now work in a horseshoe layout which allows them to view what fellow workers are doing. If work is observed to accumulate in one area, they are responsible for solving this problem. Results show that the new system has reduced inventories, shortened lead times, improved quality, and decreased employee absenteeism, turnover and accidents.
