Hidden extras: how people get overlooked in takeovers
Article Abstract:
A joint study by the London Business School and Egon Zehnder International examined the human side of corporate acquisitions, with emphasis on the personnel function's role in the process. Over 100 corporate chairs, directors, and CEOs were interviewed in a total of 40 cases of corporate acquisition in the US and Great Britain. Results indicated clearly that the personnel function is perceived to have little or any influence in the acquisition process. Two-thirds of the respondents had not included the personnel function in any way before the deal was signed. Just 37 percent of acquiring firms conducted personnel and management audits of seller's staff. Results suggest that business tends to continue as usual after the majority of corporate acquisitions. Manpower levels held steady or increased in over 66 percent of the companies studied.

IPM policy-making in the '90s
Article Abstract:
The removal of national committees from the three-layered structure of the Institute of Personnel Management's Personnel Management Policy Committee (PMPC) will facilitate the introduction of a new policy-making framework. Under the new two-tier framework, the PMPC will steer personnel policies and establish goals. The working parties, constituting the framework's second layer, will then function on an ad hoc basis to provide the PMPC with the necessary recommendations formulated by a panel of experts and specialists based on information derived from extensive research. The use of working parties also results in minimized time commitment as compared to the national committees.

Personnel's management role
Article Abstract:
Personnel departments have a special role to play in the management team. Aside from fulfilling their traditional role of representing the interests of employees, personnel departments can actively assist the management team by helping to control labor costs and by educating employees about the need to boost productivity. The importance of the roles played by personnel departments is increasingly being recognized by senior management as many companies realize the absolute necessity of improving labor productivity in the highly competitive business environment of the 1990s.
