How Campbell manages its rural health care dollars
Article Abstract:
Campbell Soup Co has successfully lowered health care expenses for its rural operations by developing and implementing an innovative primary health care network system. Campbell's answer to rising health care costs was to forego the services of health maintenance organizations and insurance companies, and to create its own managed care program. This in-house program allows the company total control of its health care spending and the opportunity to get community employers and health care providers involved in health care issues. Campbell's program is unique in that it employees are not allowed to self-refer and physicians are asked to case-manage every patient's care and to get involved in monthly board meetings. This program is currently being implemented in Campbell's operations in Paris, TX; Maxton, NC; Willard and Napoleon, OH; and Douglas, GA. 'Personnel Journal' has chosen Campbell Soup Co to be the recipient of the 1992 Optimas Award for Innovation.

Deere's HMO turns crisis into profit
Article Abstract:
Deere and Co's decision to establish the John Deere Health Care Inc and Heritage National Healthplan Inc occured when its health care costs reached $20 million in 1971. An additional factor was dissatisfaction with the services provided by its insurance carrier. The creation of its own highly successful HMO in 1980 enabled the company to offer such services to other large employers, thereby turning a major problem into a financial opportunity. The company's HMO clients currently number more than 300 and include Eastman Kodak Co, Monsanto Chemical Co, Sundstrand Corp and Chrysler Corp. Factors cited for the success of the venture include careful planning and commitment to service quality. In recognition of the company's outstanding management efforts, it was awarded the 1992 Optimas Award.
