'If I had my druthers. . .'
Article Abstract:
In 1982, Dow Jones and Company created 'The druthers program' for career development and change. The program is based on the beliefs that employees should be responsible for their own careers, that managers should be actively involved in the career development of their employees, and that promotion should be based on merit. The program starts with the employee writing a letter to his manager, stating his interest in a job change and listing his education and experience, followed by a hiring decision made by the manager after consultation with the employee's current manager. When an employee wants a job outside his present department, a copy of the 'druthers' letter goes to the national coordinator of the program. The program is efficient and cost-effective, and is supported by company-sponsored career planning sessions. The difficulties of the program are briefly discussed.

Keep productivity ratings timely
Article Abstract:
Measuring employee productivity is an important managerial task, but some appraisal systems may not be effective for encouraging employee motivation. One system that does provide employee motivation is the time-based index (TBI), which provides feedback on the achievement of time-related goals. The TBI measures the estimated time for task completion divided by actual time to finish a task. The TBI can be linked with other performance indices such as the productivity rating idex which measures quality and time. These systems are beneficial because they provide immediate feedback which enhances employee motivation and productivity.
