Internet mailing lists: what's in it for HR?
Article Abstract:
The Internet can be an endless source of information for HR professionals. At present, there are around 25 million people connected to the Internet through more than 45,000 computer networks in over 70 countries. By tapping into this international network of information databases, HR people can gain access to needed information without having to go to libraries, bookstores or universities. Newcomers to the Internet will be relieved to find out that there are many HR professionals, consultants and academics already linked to the network who have formed discussion groups, developed Frequency Asked Question lists or introduced an online HR guide to the Internet. Mailing lists are especially helpful because they facilitate the discussion of topics among special interest groups. All that HR professionals need to enter the Internet are a computer, a telephone, a modem and a service provider.

How fun flies at Southwest Airlines
Article Abstract:
Southwest Airlines (SWA) firmly believes in the importance of humor in improving employee management, customer service and corporate earnings. Company officials are convinced that having a fun work environment creates a strong sense of community and helps alleviate the pressures of hard work and competition. Consequently, SWA chooses applicants with a sense of humor and trains them to operate in a friendly workplace and to provide good customer service. SWA Pres. and CEO Herbert D. Kelleher, dubbed by Fortune magazine as the 'High Priest of Ha-Ha,' says that he looks for individuals with the right attitude because this cannot be acquired from any training program. The airline's unique corporate culture may be the reason why it has remained successful in an industry plagued by labor-management conflicts, layoffs, high turnover, fare wars and soaring operating costs.

Taking a spin on CD-ROM
Article Abstract:
Practical and inexpensive CD-ROMs are now available to HR professionals. Using these storage discs, HR managers can develop, file, access and evaluate enormous quantities of information without investing huge sums. CD-ROMs can also enable HR practitioners to take advantage of integrated audio, visual, touch, graphic, text and animation programs, thereby making their work not only easier, but also more exciting. They no longer have to view presentations in plain conventional text and graphics. However, HR professionals must be wary of the disadvantages of CD-ROMs. One of these is that an original disk cannot be manipulated and additional text cannot be included. However, innovations may make this task possible in the near future.
