Million dollar babies
Article Abstract:
Perinatal care costs companies millions of dollars each year in medical expenses, but companies can reduce costs by focusing on employee education and by monitoring pregnant employees. According to the Census Bureau, 20% of babies are born with complications; 10% of those are considered serious; and only 40% of mothers complete pregnancy and childbirth uneventfully. Prevention programs offering education to pregnant women, identifying high-risk pregnancies, and giving risk appropriate care are key to lowering costs. Oster/Sunbeam Appliance Co instituted such a program when four employees' pregnancies incurred 50% of the company's medical costs for its 600 employees in 1984 and 1985. The program has reduced costs per maternity case at the firm by 90% since 1984.

Cost management through case management
Article Abstract:
Although 20 percent of medical claims use 80 percent of claim dollars, such claims have usually been evaluated solely on the fact of whether the condition is covered. However, medical case management programs offer a less costly alternative. These programs can be run in-house using qualified nurses or can use outside services. Case management programs achieve their greatest cost reductions by intervening early in catastrophic claims and speeding recovery through the use of specialized rehabilitation services. However, they also reduce costs by monitoring the lengths of hospital stays and auditing hospital bills.

On site clinics: a corporate health care check-up
Article Abstract:
To reduce health care costs, some companies are setting up in-house health care clinics, usually run by a nurse practitioner. The routine procedures that these clinics perform, such as examinations, check-ups, and the monitoring of chronic illnesses save a considerable amount of money. Some programs also offer health education programs, stop-smoking clinics, and blood pressure screening programs. The establishment of an on-site clinic at Gould Defense Systems, Inc. is considered and the savings realized by the company are specified.
