Myths surround alcoholism
Article Abstract:
Personnel professionals can improve the way they help employees deal with alcoholism by becoming aware of common 'myths' connected to alcoholism and learning to help employees overcome them. A significant myth is that if recovering alcoholics give into their cravings for alcohol and moderately imbibe alcoholic beverages, they will lose control. Research indicates that alcoholics can successfully moderate their drinking habits, and that the threat of a relapse is greater if the recovering alcoholic believes that moderate drinking will lead to loss of control. Personnel professionals can counter the negative aspects of alcoholism myths by taking steps to learn about current developments in the treatment of alcoholism and by relaying the information objectively to employees who may need help dealing with drinking problems.

The dilemma of legal drug abuse
Article Abstract:
Personnel managers need to be aware that legal drug abuse can cause problems in the work environment and that often employees who are abusing legal drugs are not aware of how medication is affecting their behavior. Two case studies are presented to illustrate typical situations which can result from employees abusing medication unknowingly. To address the problem of legal drug abuse, counselors and personnel professionals need to consider certain circumstances when making employee evaluations, including using a holistic approach to assess problems, asking employees questions which address medication usage, and referring employees to physicians for reevaluation if medical drug abuse is suspected.
