Older workers help meet employment needs
Article Abstract:
Changing demographics mean that the US population is aging, with the number of young work force entrants declining sharply. Personnel policies and practice will need to change to better address older workers' needs. Almost half of the work force will be ages 35 to 54 by the year 2000, an increase from 35% today. Corporations have not been addressing older workers' needs because of rigid employee benefit policies, the assumption that older workers are costly, beliefs that older workers have diminished capacities, and limited flexible working arrangements. Older workers can be as physically and mentally capable and trainable as younger workers. Travelers Insurance Co has several programs to involve older and retired workers, including a Retiree Job Bank, preretirement counseling, and retraining programs.

Employee-supported drug testing
Article Abstract:
It is possible to adopt a drug testing program that has the support of the employees. The Miami Valley Hospital (Dayton, OH) followed an implementation strategy of employing a task force of managers to study the problem and make recommendations, consulting with managers and employees to obtain reactions to the program, training all managers in the policy before it went into effect, and announcing the program to all employees before the program was implemented.
