On-the-job employee counseling: focus on performance
Article Abstract:
Employees whose job performance is substandard because of personal or work-related problems may require some kind of counseling from their managers. Managers should take constructive action to solve problems before they reach the crisis stage, but should focus on job performance during the counseling process. Time pressures, feeling intimidated by the employee, legal fears or lack of skills may prevent a manager from intervening when an employee needs counseling, but the manager should realize that problems of this nature do not solve themselves. Alternatives to counseling, such as 'getting tough' or being extra nice to the employee are also ineffective. The aim of counseling should be to help the employee identify areas that need improvement. Counseling should be specific, consistent and include positive comments as well as negative.

Why executives need a liberal arts education
Article Abstract:
Higher level executives need a liberal arts education that is general in nature and covers a wide range of topics. A specialized education is too narrow in scope and does not train the executive to take into account all possible aspects of a decision. A liberal education prepares the executive to view the internal and external environment in which a decision must be made and to understand the long-term effects of that decision. A liberal arts education teaches students the skills of communication which are necessary for executives. Liberal education is a life-long process.
