Implementing manufacturing innovations: critical choices of structure and staffing roles
Article Abstract:
Manufacturing process innovations involve issues in information processing and organizational learning. Technological innovations such as computer-aided design and manufacturing, flexible manufacturing systems, and programmable robots make possible the achievement of multiple goals. A case study is described which involves an aerospace firm that manufactures military aircraft. Innovations at this firm include a parts-planning process system (Compu-Plan), and a project team for developing, implementing, and computerizing parts changes. Using the data from Compu-Plan, an integrated model of innovation is developed. Process innovations can be supported through the political and structural context in which they occur and through staffing with the appropriate people.
