HR approaches for the age of globalization
Article Abstract:
International training and development expert and managing partner of Bennett Associates Rita Bennett believes that companies that want to compete in global markets must employ innovative human resources (HR) techniques to enhance the retention and effectiveness of expatriate employees, and to make the most of overseas investments. Bennett recommends that HR professionals given the task of establishing employees overseas follow several steps, including developing culturally appropriate business plans for international activities; setting up clear, realistic, and bicultural international objectives; and selecting only employees who possess the proper characteristics, personalities, and attitudes for intercultural effectiveness.

HR skills help managers turn around poor performers
Article Abstract:
Human resources (HR) managers can train line managers to improve the performance of poor performers. HR managers must make a commitment to training, coaching, and mentoring, for managers as well as the poor performers. Managers must understand the reasons for poor performance, which include interpersonal problems, a lack of interest, and a lack of discipline. Poor performance is often coupled with poor performance evaluation techniques that do not require employees to set goals. Effective training programs consist of respect for employees and their abilities, assessments conducted by managers alone and with employees, ongoing training, positive reinforcement, and daily feedback.
