Professional updating: the employer's role
Article Abstract:
Employers are beginning to develop specific approaches toward continuing professional development (CPD), a concept being advocated by the Institute of Personnel Management (IPM) and other professional organizations. These initiatives stem from organizational considerations and not from the professional development needs of an individual. The CPD trend in personnel operations is launching professionl development projects at a time when mobility between specialist areas is restricted. Two companies that launched efforts to enhance the professionalism of their functional specialists at such a time are Wellcome Foundation Ltd and British Telecommunication PLC.
