Renewed affirmative action enforcement is imminent
Article Abstract:
The Department of Labor's Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs is responsible for enforcing Executive Order 11246. The order outlines affirmative action requirements for employers with government contracts. It was vigorously enforced during the Carter years but has been neglected during the Reagan Administration. Opponents claim that compliance standards are complicated, time-consuming, and expensive. However, since the Democrats took control of the Senate, the order is again being enforced. A Democratic or even a liberal Republican administration after Pres Reagan will increase the likelihood of strict enforcement. Employers with government contracts should update compliance plans, including new hiring, promoting, reassignments, and compensation changes for women and minorities.

Can employees carry the elder care burden?
Article Abstract:
An increasing number of workers must provide care to both children under the age of 18 and to elderly parents. The burden is especially heavy on women, who are often the primary providers of care for elderly parents. These workers are often forced to miss work, pass up opportunities for advancement, or quit their jobs. Employers are learning that it is often in their best interests to help these employees by providing information and referral services, offering flexible work schedules, and making personal leave available to care providers.
