Report from Mexico: overview
Article Abstract:
Mexico's economic reform under the leadership of Pres Carlos Salinas de Gortari has been successful in controlling macro-economic imbalances, structural inefficiency and foreign debt. The consumer price index decreased from 159.2% in 1989 to 20 to 30% in 1990 and 1991. Growth in gross national product was 3.9% in 1990 and 5% in the first half of 1991, as compared to 0.2% in 1989. Political and social changes are likewise happening, brought about by privatization and the strengthening of democratic systems. Mexico's increased foreign trade and its free-trade negotiations with its neighbors are important steps towards economic progress.
