Serious play at work
Article Abstract:
A significant challenge facing companies and their managers and employees is to create self-managed work environments that enhance productivity and make work a matter of personal enjoyment. Regardless of extraneous factors such as type of job, level of education, and place of employment, the workforce can be divided into employees with two basic personality types: 'reluctant workers', and 'serious players'. Reluctant workers share assumptions including that reaching their life's goals is a matter of luck, and that the odds are always bad; work is only a means to obtain what they want from life; and their life is directed by someone else's priorities. Serious players believe that they have all the resources they need to succeed; have high self esteem; and use self-fulfilling prophecies, that is, they believe that if they can envision themselves achieving a goal, they will. In the long term, serious players can make important contributions to the success of their companies and to the image of their workplaces.

Teens play a role in moves overseas
Article Abstract:
The ability of overseas employees to carry out an effective transition to the new work environment in the foreign country weighs heavily on the ability of their family to assimilate and adjust to the new foreign culture. The teenage children of expatriate employees carry a particularly strong influence on the success of the transition. The culture shock that comes with the move to a foreign environment can be eased through pre-trip orientations and cross-cultural training. Key elements of such assimilation programs are language training courses, family counseling prior to departure, and activities that will allow the teenagers to converse and share with other teenagers their experiences. It is extremely helpful to consider the current educational level of the teenage children of employees to be sent overseas in the decision for expatriation.
