Shiftwork and health
Article Abstract:
Shiftworkers have been shown to have increased risk of heart and circulatory disorders, digestive problems and depression. Shiftwork can be 'learnt' by the body clock, and it is sensible to timetable night workers to do a week at a time to minimise disruption. It is beneficial for asthma sufferers. An EC Directive proposes that shiftworkers have at least 11 hours off in 24, and a day off every seven days. Those on night work should not work more than eight hours in every 24 hours.

Drive to survive
Article Abstract:
Employers should take an active role in ensuring that employees have the necessary driving skills to avoid accidents as far as possible. Particular attention must be given to changing the attitude of the driver, ensuring that he or she is fully aware of the vehicle and the surroundings. Taking such action produces clear economic rewards, as there is less chance of losing valuable vehicles or employees, and also brings moral satisfaction.

The end of the line for the Health and Safety Executive?
Article Abstract:
There is a possibility that the enforcement arm of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) may be privatised. Other European countries do not have a comparable organisation, relying on accident insurance instead. Surveys indicate that these countries in some cases have a higher accident rate than in Britain. A case is made for the retention of the HSE.
