Shuttle service moves inner-city residents to jobs
Article Abstract:
Preferred Products Inc (PPI) found that it had to address its transportation problems first before it could resolve the problem of recruiting seasonal workers. Every year, increased demand for its products during the holiday season makes it necessary for the food company to hire additional seasonal workers. PPI is located in the small community of Chaska, MN, where labor is scarce and it found it difficult to recruit workers from the neighboring city of Minneapolis because there were no transportation systems linking the two areas. The company found willing workers with the help of a nonprofit organization offering employment assistance to disadvantaged residents of Minneapolis's central city, but it also realized that it had to provide its own transportation services to attract these workers. When the regional transit organization found the PPI's plight was shared by a number of other firms in Chaska, a public bus service to the area was finally introduced.

HR adds value to board of directors
Article Abstract:
The appointment of Karen D. Weatherholtz, human resources VP for McCormick and Company Inc, to the company's board of directors is seen as a major step forward for the increased role of women and human resources directors in corporate management. According to Weatherholtz, the selection of a human resources director to the board is a logical decision because the company has always been employee-oriented. However, she believes that although her promotion serves the mission of human relations to mine the potential of all employees and to encourage workforce diversity, she was chosen not because she is a woman but because she deserved it. Weatherholtz also thinks that her positions on the board of governors of the Maryland New Directions Inc and other advisory boards have greatly helped her prepare for her new role as a member of the board of directors at McCormick.
