Mentors offer students the tools for job success
Article Abstract:
Procter & Gamble Co and Woodward High School, both in Cincinnati, OH, has jointly established a mentoring program called Project ASPIRE. Standing for Advise, Support, Prepare, Inform, Respect and Encourage, ASPIRE aims to help students develop attitudes that will help them succeed in an academic program. The mentoring program also aims to provide Woodward students opportunities for personal development and success. The program focuses on the special needs of potential drop-outs, students who join the labor force after high school and college-bound students, but it also welcomes any of Woodward's 2,000 students in grades 7-12 who are in need of a mentor or a tutor. It currently involves 150 students and 150 mentors. ASPIRE is a good investment for Procter & Gamble because it develops the skills of potential employees and maintains the appeal of the community to its present workers.

Embrace today's new deal
Article Abstract:
Employee commitment has become a victim of the new employment contract. Replacing the old employment deal, the new contract indicates that the employer and the employee meet each other's needs for the moment but are not making long-term commitments. However, the absence of any commitment can be counterproductive to both parties, and it is the responsibility of human resources managers to find ways to engage workers for the duration of their employment. A recent study by Tower Perrin provides clues on how to ensure employee commitment in the present employment environment. Results of the survey indicates that employers can inspire employee commitment by providing career security, business alignment, management effectiveness and customer focus. The study also shows that employees are willing to accept responsibility for the quality of their work and performance.
