The human resource potential of Americans over 50
Article Abstract:
Over one million older Americans are ready and able to become part of the labor force. In 1989, Louis Harris and Assoc surveyed 1,751 55-to-64-year-old males and 1,758 50-to-59-year-old females about their work histories, preferences, education, income, health, and quality of life. The results were used as the basis for a related study estimating the number of older Americans available for work. Labor market commitment was measured in terms of job availability, motivation, physical ability, job search behavior, and working conditions. The results indicated that 1.1 million older Americans were available for work. Most of the available workers had retired involuntarily, primarily as the result of being dismissed. Most of the older workers demonstrated a high degree of flexibility in the type of work they would accept. For example, 54% would work nights and weekends, and 83% would accept seasonal work.

Self-renewal of the Japanese firm and the human resource strategy
Article Abstract:
Basic restructuring of the traditional Japanese human resources management style is needed in light of that country's mature domestic market, a stagnant economy, and the development of newly-industrialized nations in international markets. It is possible for Japanese companies to renew themselves through a paradigm shift at the level of corporate strategy. Japanese companies have started to reform their personnel functions from being productivity-centered to emphasis on creativity. This creative-centered approach calls for creation of strategic vision through worker commitment, middle management which is entrepreneurial, and personnel management which is multi-dimensional.
