Oiling the wheels of competence
Article Abstract:
Much of BP International's success in the oil industry rests on the firm's commitment to management competence. A case study of BP's competency assessment system reveals an emphasis on methods such as critical incidence and repertory grids. Data that was collected was analyzed and clustered in order to develop a coherent classification system that revealed elements of BP's corporate culture. The company applied this data by analyzing individual groups and making developmental suggestions. How high tech helped uncover hidden talents
Article Abstract:
IBM UK's Havant operation developed a high-speed method of identifying the employee experience and skills available in its work force by building a personal skills inventory database. The system avoids using codes, relying instead on 'natural' language English words. Searching of the database can be accomplished by character strings, via a commercially available software tool known as a query management facility. The database allows direct employee input, saving time and tedious entry of hard copy. Security is maintained by an encrypted database management system and security codes for authorized users.
