The route to performance management
Article Abstract:
The second stage of the study conducted by the Institute of Personnel Management revealed that most companies are yet to develop an integrated and strategic approach to performance management. Four critical areas of concern emerged from the evaluation of performance management in the participant subjects. First, it was found out that a common vision of goals and purposes is lacking among the lower echelons of the company. Second, there was no sense of ownership and commitment among line managers due to the perception that the human resources (HR) management is the driving force behind performance management. Third, the HR departments failed to device a proper reward system. Finally, the practice of performance management by the companies were motivated by external forces. These four issues are pointed as the reasons why companies have not succeeded with their performance management policies.

Ethics and the job interview
Article Abstract:
A survey was conducted to find out what interviewers and job applicants perceive to be acceptable conduct in employment interviews. Sixty interviewers and 90 applicants were asked to answer a questionnaire soliciting the views of participants on the issues of interview preparation, invasion of privacy, honesty, interview methods and post-interview activity. Findings indicate that majority of interviewers and candidates did not think of preparing for interview presentations as dishonest. Most of the candidates objected to being questionned about their personal lives, but not about their personal beliefs, spouses or family background. Almost all of the interviewers felt that candidates must be truthful during employment interviews. As to interview methods, more than half of the interviewers preferred panel interviews while most of the candidates preferred one-to-one interviews.
