Financial education enhances cafeteria benefits
Article Abstract:
Providing employees with a financial education can help them assess their needs and goals and match their needs to the benefits offered by a company cafeteria-style plan. Cafeteria-style benefits plans offer employees more options, but if they do not have the knowledge to choose properly amongst options, the company wastes money on underused benefits and employees do not make the best use of their benefits. Financial education is a process that includes helping employees understand the existing benefits package, assess their financial needs, and match benefits to their needs. Financial education programs can use seminars and handouts to provide an overview of benefits and to address questions about specific benefits. Financial education can also be useful to a company that is downsizing its workforce by informing employees about early retirement plans.

A successful personnel professional is effective in carrying out programs, makes a significant impact on an organization's operation, and is recognized as a valuable asset. The unsuccessful one will not be viewed as a major company asset, have little influence, and make few career gains. The underlying causes for such ineffectiveness includes inappropriate self-perception of role, limited business knowledge and outlook, involvement in fads to gain recognition, and concern with unnecessary busywork. The successful personnel professional has outstanding personnel skills, has a good understanding of and contribution to general business operations and problems, seeks allies, has good communication skills, is change and future oriented, and is assertive.
