Trade unions, management and European works councils: Opening Pandora's box?
Article Abstract:
European Works Council (EWC) directives were introduced in Sep 1996 to encourage greater networking of trade unions and management throughout Europe by creating a standard towards which all countries could work. European trade unions and companies have forged greater links to benefit both sides. The emergence of multinational companies has led to a greater awareness of the importance of human resources and networking, helped by technology and globalization. Countries vary in their implementation of the EWCs directives depending on cultural and ideological differences.

The challenge of change: the positive agenda of the TGWU (United Kingdom Transport and General Workers' Union)
Article Abstract:
Around 1 million workers in the UK manufacturing industry belong to the Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU). Membership of trade unions has decreased from 13 million in 1979 to 8 million in 1997, equaling 33% of the working population. The TGWU realised it had to embrace modern work ethics to move forward and used human resource management to establish new workplace improvements. Relations between management and workers had to be improved to develop better company strategy and raise competitiveness and quality.
