A survey of 50 UK employers on teleworking indicates most employers introduce telecommuting in response to employee requests as a way to improve productivity while reducing costs. Most employers pay part of home employees' phone bills, and 50% supply all or part of the equipment. The number of office attendance days required, as well as the actual start-up costs, varies from company to company. Barclays Bank's teleworking policy is presented as an example of typical company guidelines.

UK employers could benefit from increased use of teleworkers. According to two 1996 studies, telecommuting can provide flexibility and lower costs. Workers should be self-disciplined and experienced, while managers should set clear procedures and goals for their teleworkers. This type of arrangement requires an employment relationship built on trust in order to succeed. Freelance, part-time, and multi-locational teleworkers are among the groups studied in these reports.

Teleworking increases employee effectiveness
Article Abstract:
Telecommuting leads to better performance by employees, improves the quality of their working lives and reduces the time and cost spent commuting, according to a study based on 62 in-depth interviews with telecommuters from five organizations. The advantages for employers are the improvement in employee motivation, the development of new styles of management based on trust, self-management and open communications, and saving on office space.
