Unions take a lesson from management
Article Abstract:
Cranfield University's new Centre for Strategic Trade Union Management Studies in Bedfordshire, UK, has already helped the Trades Union Congress, Unison, and the Transport and General Workers' Union despite not yet operating officially. It will formally launch before the end of 1995, to offer union groups and officers training in financial planning, marketing, and personnel management. Professor Chris Brewster and Dr John Lloyd will be joined by two others. Some who have already studied at the center say it finds the best tutors possible, regardless of their feelings toward unions.

Spotlight on electronics
Article Abstract:
Differences in staff and employment practices among electronics makers in the UK depend primarily on the nationality of plant owners - Japanese, UK, or North American. Age, size, product type, location, and other factors are less significant in determining such elements as gender breakdown of employees, production methods used, shop-floor flexibility, what information the company shares with employees, and so forth.
