Finding time to be strategic
Article Abstract:
HR departments are increasingly embracing the concept of employee self-service as new enabling technologies continue to emerge. Technology is generating a vast array of self-service applications such as skills inventories, internal job placement, and open enrollment and benefits. HR automation is being pushed further by the arrival of sophisticated client/server computing systems and corporate intranets. These technologies are saving time for the HR staff by eliminating the need to print materials and make telephone calls. At Milwaukee, WI-based W.H. Brady Co., employee-service through the use of PC-based systems, kiosks and interactive voice response is expected to significantly reduce the HR budget. It has also proven its value by freeing the HR staff from routine tasks and allowing them to become more strategic players in the organization.

E-mail: using your connections
Article Abstract:
The advent of electronic communications is radically changing the way people communicate. Today's technology allows people who have access to electronic mail (e-mail) systems to instantaneously exchange messages in various forms with one another no matter where they are in the world. The e-mail is the fastest way of communicating since it is quicker than the telephone, the fax machine and the traditional letter. It is also the most efficient communication tool available because it does not use stamps or envelopes and does not need printing. Another important benefit of electronic communication is that messages and documents can easily be stored and copied. E-mail systems can likewise be used to automate routine processes.
