Solitaire and other loafing skills
Article Abstract:
Employees can make it appear that they are busy working even though they are actually just playing solitaire on their computers. Although loafing on the job is unacceptable, managers should realize that some play solitaire during their breaks or that others do so to clear their minds or help them work through a writer's block. Given that employees are working long hours and stressed out, denying them the little time to relax and cracking down on this behavior may be counterproductive. On the other hand, simply accepting it without some form of monitoring and enforcing may also be detrimental. In issues such as this, which admittedly involve several grey areas, managers should carefully consider their policies to ensure maximum productivity and employee discipline.

The HRIS profession: development and direction
Article Abstract:
Human resource information systems (HRIS) represent a relatively new application of computer power in the organization. The growth of HRIS has been shaped primarily by the work environment, technological developments, and the impact of the HRIS professional. Business world trends, such as divestitures and acquisitions, have added to the burdens imposed on personnel management systems. HRIS is no longer confined to large companies, and the development of the microcomputer has made it easier for personnel professionals to make HRIS a new dimension of the job. HRIS professionals are challenged by product development and amateur systems to create, maintain, and reinforce their own credibility. Career development for HRIS professionals is also discussed.
